Home Theater Setup: Converted Attic Space to 4K Dolby Atmos Theater Room w/ Sony VPL-VW715ES

Hi, i’m scott newnam, ceo of audio advicetoday, i’m going to take you in a theaterwe’re just finishing up. It’S actually aconverted attic space, the customer lovesmusic concerts and movies. So i’m going to spenda little bit more extra time today, talkingabout behind the scenes, how to get your audioright and get your video right, let’s head inall right. So the first thing i want to talkto you about is the screen itself. Is a 2.

aspect ratio, meaning we’ve got a full widescreen, that’s used for movies, it’s a 127 inchacoustically, transparent screen from stewart filmscreen. This means that we’ve got the three frontspeakers behind the screen, so the sound is comingdirectly at you from the screen. That’S paired upwith a sony. 715Es projector. Now why sony whythis 715?

It’S about an 1800 lumens projector manytimes people come to us and say: oh, i want the mostlumens i can get and what i can tell you is that’snot what you should be looking for. You’Re tryingto find the right balance for the right amountof lumens for the size screen that you’ve got howmuch light you’ve got in the room, but also maxingout, with great colors and with great processingthese sony projectors that are out, like the 715they, have incredible processing, meaning whenyou’re, watching Something you don’t see, all theblocking or slow moving objects. Everything is fastand, looks tight and the colors are just beautiful. So this room has incredible lighting. So we’vegot a blue led lighting strip.

That’S going alongfacing upwards, so it’s not hitting the screen. Wehave recessed lights, that are the task lightingin the room plus we’ve got the sconces, which addthose accents but again do not shine on the screenitself, while the movie’s being watched and thenwe’ve got the floor, led lighting that enablespeople to move around during a movie safely, gettheir, popcorn, Etc, we actually have an entirevideo on how to do this correctly. If you go toaudioadvice.com and jump over to our home theatersection, we have a bunch of videos on how to’s butone of them is just how to get the lighting rightin. A theater room like this you’ll see here.

Wherewe did a control4 keypad on the way into the roomso. You can turn on the lights. When you come inone button press the lights go off the projectorturns off. Everything turns off when you leave theroom and all this is controllable from the remotecontrol itself. You can see sitting here thatwhen the customer presses play on the remoteit actually turns off the recessed lightingand sets the sconces at a certain level.

Andwhen you hit pause, it automatically. Pauses thevideo turns on the lights and has it ready? Buti can tell you sitting in this room in anyof the seats, the picture just totally popsokay. So let’s talk about the audio in this roomas. I mentioned the customer, loves movies, so thishad to be an atmos room.

So what have we got setup here? It’S actually a 7.3.4 system, so whatdoes that mean so. First we have an acousticallytransparent screen, as i mentioned, with the leftspeaker center and right behind the screen.

Thoseare all jbl synthesis, which have incredible horntweeters, which give you that smack and powwhen you’re watching a movie and action filmsthe. Other thing we have is: we have two sides: righthere and you’ll, see they’re, actually hidden, behindthe acoustic panels, and then we have rears backin, the back. The next thing to note is the ceilingspeakers, so we have two atmos speakers, thatare angled down at the main seating positionand. Then we have two behind it that areangled at the main seating position as wellgiving us, the full atmos system, and then we getto the subs and as many of you know, if you’reinto theaters, you know doing more than one sub iscritical in nailing all the seats and You can seethere’s six seats in this theater. We wanted themall to have an incredible experience, includingthrough the bass, so we actually have two 13-inchsubs up front and a 13-inch sub in the back andby doing that we’re able to even out the bass inall of the seats in this room if you’re trying tofigure out how To design your own theater jumpover to audioadvice

Com go to our home theaterpage you’ll see, we’ve actually got a fullinteractive tool, you put in the dimensionsof your room and tell it how many speakers youwant, and it will actually interactively tellyou, where every single speaker should goand help you design and build your theater okay.

So here’s the rack in the back of the room, acouple things i just want to point out to you: sofirst we’ve got incredible networking gear up, inhere and actually a control4 processor that we’reusing for the remote control that i’ll show youin a minute below that you’ll see This open spotthat’s, where the ps5 is coming in for christmasbelow, that we’ve got a roku apple tv and a blu-rayplayer, and i’m going to leave the customer oneof. The cool audio advice demo discs in here aswell below that you’ll see the anthem, receiverand, an extra anthem, amp for the extra channelsto power. This entire room above each you’ll seewe have a perforated screen that enables heatdissipation to come out because we’ve got thisback in this area. For people getting started, inthis industry, one of the things we teach them, isyou really got to learn calibration and you’ve gotto learn how to do a rack in a way that dissipatesheat really well. So one of the things we’re reallyfocused on is nailing remotes in the theater roomnothing’s worse than having four or five remotesall floating around.

You can’t find them no oneknows how to use them in this case we’re usingcontrol4 system a control4 remote when thecustomer hits play it automatically starts toplay the movie. It turns the lights down, sets thescene in the room when the customer hits pauseit automatically pauses. The movie turns the lightsback up, so you can use the restroom grab somethingto eat and come right back. In addition, you’llsee there are custom buttons, one two and threeand. What we typically do is program custom buttonone that goes to a 16:9 screen so that theycan watch football and other sports and televisioncustom button.

Two pressed moves: the screen, tofull 2.4 movie position and custom button3 toggles the sconce lights on and off all right. So let’s talk about the theater seats alittle bit. They have six row. One revolution, hometheater seats in here.

What’S really fascinatingabout the revolution seat, there used to be a chaircalled, the evolution. It was the number one sellingchair that we sold in home theaters. Then i wentto row. One and said we can make this thing betterand. I came up with three things: i’m like we couldmake the ultimate chair by making these threeadjustments, which had the ability to adjust theleds in the cup holder and below.

It also have theright memory function, so you could move the chairto the right memory functions. It’S actually gota little place where, if you drop, popcorn, etc, itcatches it. So you don’t have all the popcorn belowthe seat anyways they made the chair for us itis. Now the number one selling chair by far in thehistory of audio advice, we actually ship themall over the country, one of the cool things that icame up with when we were designing the revolutionchair, was to have the actual tray tables sittingin the arm of every single chair. So every chaircomes with them and then you simply pop itin here, you’ve got a place to put your drinkthat, doesn’t slip off with the indention here: putyour food or your popcorn and you’re good to gookay.

So one of the things i want to show you interms of projector calibration most companies thatare starting out learning how to do home. Theatersthat watch our videos, you all know how to set yourcolors right and basically get your shift. Rightyour zoom in right, but one of the things i find alot of people don’t do well is to understand to goin here and actually do panel alignment so you’llsee on the sony here. If you go down to the toolssection, you can actually drop down and you’ll seethere’s. A space here called panel alignment godown there click adjust and what you’re reallytrying to do is to line up the red green andblue panels.

So i’ll just show you as an exampleif, i’m shifting by zone, i can go down to adjustand. This will bring up a grid on your screenand you’ll, bring the cursor to themiddle, and you can actually select itand move the panels to get your red green andblue perfectly on. We actually do this after everysingle theater that we do in this particular casei came into the theater, our technicians were doneand, the thing is just rocking they’ve nailedthe video and the customer just loves itso. The final thing we do in every theater onceit’s all completely done – is to calibrate theaudio itself, so i’m actually running arc genesison the system right now. It’S actually calibratingthe frequency response of every single speakerin, the room.

So all the audio device team membersare experts at doing these calibrations, if you’rebuying an anthem from us nationwide and we ship itto you we actually will send you the tips andtricks on how to do arc genesis. The very bestso a big thank you to the install team. Thatdid this theory, you guys – did an amazing jobthank you to the customer for letting us come inhere. It’S been a lot of fun videoing this theaterif. You want to learn more about home theatersor setting them up or how to design or how toinstall jump over to audioadvice.
